Governments of developing countries should increase teachers’ access to computer devices (laptops and tablets) as a palliative to cushion the adverse effects of COVID-19 pandemic in education.

The coronavirus pandemic has forced a shift to virtual classes in online education globally and has helped promote home education experience to many schoolchildren and students, but could the continuation be sustained in African and other developing countries in the world even after the coronavirus pandemic ends.

The reality is that practising online education when schoolchildren and students are not in school can be very challenging in Africa and many developing countries of the world and as such can be a hindrance to the teachers, educators and students in developing relevant 21st-century education technology skills.

As a way to enabling more teachers and lecturers in Africa and many developing countries of the world consolidate on online education continuously and sustain the switch to 21st-century teaching and learning in education successfully, African national governments and other developing countries of the world should initiate programmes that can teachers and lecturers have unlimited access to computer devices more convenient for online education programmes like tablets and laptops.

Delivering such educational technology, smart educational tools and innovative infrastructure will significantly improve the educational experience of school children and students right from the primary to higher education level.

Provision under this service will be key in enabling 21st-century teaching and learning and in increasing access to quality education for teachers and lecturers in Africa and other developing countries of the world.

Increase in the use of this educational technology in teachers and lecturers in the education profession will make the schoolchildren and students more tuned to online education and, in turn, more students will be prepared for the future.

Imagine teachers, lecturers and educators being able to teach and create and school children and students learn, carry out academic tasks and improve – boosting productivity in all and so much more with a friendly and supportive assistant available to both teachers and learners for 24 hours per day.

Just recently PORGiESOFT, a Cambridge, UK-based EdTech startup with expertise in researching and developing education technology solutions for Africa, announced that it is launching a new service to address the education infrastructure problem in Africa. The service will be provided to teachers and lecturers to own computer devices (tablets and laptops) either on monthly Rent-Only or Rent-to-Own subscription plans in order to enable them to consolidate on the in-vogue online education of school children and students.
